I discovered that on Italian social media it is very common to wish each other “Buona Immacolata da tutti noi” They celebrate the feast day with a feast. We are so Protestant over here . Sigh
Nothernhermit, your comment about America can likewise be made about us here in Australia, only more so. Sad to say, Catholics here are often apathetic to, and sometimes even irritated by, the Immaculate Conception.
I recently watched a video on Youtube that helps to explain why the Church in our countries have become, as you note, “so Protestant”. Australia wasn’t mentioned but it highlighted that Irish immigrants to the USA wanted to lift their social status and so strove to fit into the mainstream Protestant culture.
It has been remarked here in recent years that Australian Catholics are less Catholic / more Protestant than those in the USA. Perhaps because unlike the US, Ireland was almost the sole channel of Catholicism in Australia until WWII: Irish convicts, then Irish immigrants looking for a better life, followed by Irish missionaries. Those Irish missionaries did a magnificent job providing most of our priests until well into the 20th century and our teaching orders as well. However, those teaching orders strove to fit their students into the mainstream Protestant culture here while maintaining the Catholic religion. That didn’t work out well.
Thank you Father for again putting up the link to the talk you gave in 2013. I enjoy reading it each time and think my understanding is improving with each re-reading. The deficiency in our bible translations has also become clearer.
Please tell us about Father Ignace de la Poterie’s study of Luke 1:28 when you have time.
