The signs of the times. Lord, forgive our weak use of the freedom for which you died.

Sadly, the government of the Republic of Ireland would not allow the Catholic Churches there to open during Holy Week and Easter. They will, however, consider allowing them to open as soon as Holy Week and Easter Sunday is over!

Catholics are more fortunate here in Australia. As far as I know Catholic Churches Australia-wide were open throughout Holy Week and Easter Sunday, and police have not interrupted Mass or any church service. However, parishioners are required to observe hygiene and distancing rules because of Covid-19.
I don’t know if the following applies to all Australian diocese but in my diocese parishioners do not have to wear masks in church and are allowed to receive Holy Communion in the hand or on the tongue.

It is probably because of my Irish heritage that the video linked to below affected me so much but I think others might also be interested in it as it highlights the return of persecution of the Church. The video is of a priest driven by the Irish government’s closure of churches to offer Easter Sunday Mass on an ancient Mass rock as his predecessors had long ago during times of persecution. In his homily, Father reminded the Irish faithful that “the tomb Jesus was in was closed, our churches are closed but Christ, as we know, is not bound by tombs or doors or stones” and he prayed, “May You (our great God) be with us as we journey from here until one day we can stand shoulder to shoulder again in our churches”.http://blog.newadvent.org/2021/04/amid-shutdown-of-public-worship-priest.html
