There are those who insist that Cardinal Cupich has been vindicated. But I’m not so sure that the Cardinal thinks he needs to be vindicated one way or the other.
Having listened to Father Emanuel Torres-Fuentes and then seen what the Pastor, Father John Trout published about this, it seems that the timeline is that Father Trout spoke with Cardinal Cupich, and then later told Father Emanuel that “The Cardinal said…” perhaps not closing out the quotation marks in his instructions to Father Emanuel, but insisting that the Saint Michael prayer not be said publicly and insisting that the Hail Mary not be recited, but that there should be a hymn instead. Obediently and respectfully Father Emanuel then passed on the instructions, thinking it was all from the Cardinal. As it is, Rev. John Trout personally and positively affirmed what Father Emanuel said. What Father Emanuel said is exactly what is wanted by Father Trout, who in directing the younger priest, invoked the name of the Cardinal. So…?
Father John Trout goes on to inescapably imply that the Hail Mary and the Saint Michael Prayer militate against the unity of the Church, and specifically that the Hail Mary and the Saint Michael Prayer demonstrate the deepest disrespect of Pope Francis in that they militate against devoted support of the Holy Father. He does this in the same paragraph providing us with the details of his private conversation with the Cardinal, inescapably implying that he is parroting exactly what the Cardinal told him. Is that like his own misspeak with Father Emanuel? Just sayin’…
How anyone could possibly view the Hail Mary and Saint Michael prayer as somehow against the very person of Pope Francis is beyond me.
Anyway, right now I’m going to say the Hail Mary and Saint Michael prayer for Father Emanuel, and also for Father John Trout and Cardinal Blase Cupich and Pope Francis. I’m sure Father Emanuel will appreciate if you join me.
Just to say, those wanting us to say the Saint Michael prayer include Pope Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis. Here’s the full set of the Leonine Prayers if it’s these that are the real problem in Chicago…
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. (x3)
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee to we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this exile, show unto us the blessed Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O pious, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O holy Mother of God. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us pray. O God, our refuge and our strength, look down with mercy upon the people who cry to Thee; and by the intercession of the glorious and immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Saint Joseph her spouse, of the blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and of all the Saints, in Thy mercy and goodness hear our prayers for the conversion of sinners, and for the liberty and exaltation of the Holy Mother the Church. Through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in the battle, be our protection against the malice and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and do thou, O prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into Hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. (x3)
