And here’s that painting of Lucia’s vision in 1929 mentioned at the end of the video:

I always thought Malachi was a bit of a gangster*** (I’ll explain that below). At any rate, he was a protégé of fellow Jesuit, Cardinal Augustin Bea. He was Bea’s secretary from 1958-1964. The story is that he was outside the obviously open doors of the papal apartment while the third secret of Fatima and, presumably, its explanation, were read out to Pope John XXIII, Cardinal Bea, and others.
Look. I haven’t researched any of this. This is the first time I have seen this video. Perhaps that tells you how much I don’t know. However, I do have some questions:
- Such a closely held secret is not going to be carelessly read out with the doors open. If Malachi got as far as the apartment at the end of that long, ornate, vaulted corridor of the terzo piano of the Apostolic Palace [I’ve been there] in his accompaniment of “The Great” Cardinal Bea, but then, humiliated, had to stay outside, he was surely actively disinvited when it was seen that he was there. That’s not consistent with his standing outside open doors, those oversized, heavy, wooden, sound-proof doors. There would have been a pair of Swiss Guards stationed outside those doors, and for such secrecy, the doors would have been closed so that the guards would not hear the secret, regardless of Malachi.
- Yet, in the video above, Malachi answers about small details with certainty as if he had heard the secret in full in person. Is it that an incredibly cynical Cardinal Bea told him in detail what had been read out? Knowing from my own research on Cardinal Bea the attitude he had at this time, I’d say that would be most probable.
- At any rate, if he really was such an ardent supporter of Father Nicholas Nightingale Gruner why didn’t he just reveal what he knew of the Third Secret and its explanation?
- Why, in the video above, does he contrast Mary’s wishes that the Secret be revealed over against those ecclesiastics who erroneously think they know better. Why not just say what he knows? I don’t get it.
Anyone know more about this?
But I do know really a lot about Cardinal Bea by way of research I did over years at the Pontifical Biblical Institute. Totally my narrative here, but I’m guessing that it is he who encouraged Pope John XXIII and later Pope Paul VI not to reveal the secret and not to consecrate Russia by name to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
***On my opinion that Malachi was a bit of a gangster… For instance, his pop-psychology Hostage to the Devil has to be the singular worst book on exorcism ever to have been penned, promoting exorcism as a fight for psychological dominance of the exorcist over Satan, with Jesus having nothing to do with it, a psychological evolution topping off the equally fraudulent biological evolution of another Jesuit, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Horrific. I spoke to him about all this at a coffee shop near his apartment in New York City in the mid-1990s. Commentary on that encounter could fill a small book.
Great post Fr George. I had read Windswept House and so I am familiar with Malachi Martin and liked reading your thoughts about him. I have put the painting of Lucia’s vision on my desktop. Thank you Fr. George. you are in my daily rosary.
Malachi Martin mixed truth and fiction and made it all sound like truth, not just in his books but also in the interviews he gave. He was aware of corruption in the Church and capitalised on it.
