Should the national security of the country be compromised to its very core in order to save the jobs of a few people, embarrassing just a few others? Isn’t that like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic? Those jobs won’t be there, and no one will care about any embarrassment. Compromising national security has consequences. There are tough words in the press conference above. But nothing is as it seems, ever.
Trying to crack down on unmaskings and leaks coming from the cloak and dagger crowd has the truly impossible obstacle that the cloak and dagger crowd are really really good at creating physical levels of deniability. That’s what they do for a living, 24/7/365.
Reporters might not be prosecuted for reporting what they are told. We’re after the source, says Sessions. But what if there are physical levels of deniability, using a series of dead drops? This happens a million times a day. Too cloak and dagger for you?
Just as obstructionist as any dead drop that brings any investigation to a halt are the conflicts of interest that don’t let investigations go anywhere. I can think of any number of scenarios involving zero willingness to investigate anything whatsoever. Just weeks ago Jason Chaffetz resigned upon completion of his report on Fast and Furious.
But let’s take a case where the unmaskers and leakers are so desperate for self-promotion, are feeling so immortal and powerful that they couldn’t care less about physical levels of deniability, depending solely upon conflicts of interest to protect themselves. That would work well unless… unless… an unmasker of an unmasker had a number of avenues of recourse to remove the threats to national security (which threats simultaneously compromise the POTUS and which put individual lives at risk). And let’s say that those doing up an investigation know that about other levels of recourse which, however, leapfrog them because of their obstructionism. What are they to do?
Do the right thing.
- A new Special Response Team in the FBI?
- Unmaskers and leakers to be stopped?
- Stopping the compromising of and threats to national security, the POTUS and key individuals targeted by terrorists now a priority?
Sounds great. But the system is made, though not on purpose, to produce and encourage traitors who live off the adrenaline of unmasking and leaking for personal gain. The alphabet soup crowd and even offices internal to whatever departments and agencies work against each other, even in the same building, without knowing it, or knowing it, giving a wink and a nod to each other. A game. America is the loser. Nothing is as it seems, ever.
We’ll see how this works out, or not. If it doesn’t work out, that’ll be embarrassing. There are other options to test the new determination. I can think of two, possibly three.
I like how Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein insists about all this. We’ll see.
